About Catherine Henry

I have been a potter since 1994. I live and work in a lovely valley in the back of the coastal town of Montara, California. My studio is a geodesic dome surrounded by gardens and animals and several kilns, including a downdraft gas kiln for my reduction firings.

I do everything – pug my clay, hand-mix all my own glazes, and make each piece individually. My work has a wide range of styles and functions. I love bright colors, but I am also totally passionate about the earthy Japanese shino glazes that evoke a sense of nature.

Wabi sabi, a Japanese aesthetic, is a lovely term that describes beauty in nature and the natural process of imperfection, of returning to nothingness. A ripped lip, a gouge, off kilter. So real... So natural... So connecting. I strive to keep this magical quality in my work!
